When deciding which parent should have custody of a child, the protection of the child and the child's best interests commonly preclude placing the child with a parent who has committed an act of sexual abuse against another child, even if the event is remote in time. But the overriding task remains one of determining the child's best interests, which requires considering numerous factors, and circumstances can arise where the child's best interests are served in custodial care by the parent who once committed an abusive act. 2. The trial court may require the custodial parent to satisfy the non-custodial parent's equitable lien on the parties' homestead prior to the emancipation of the youngest child.
